Feng Shui To Attract Love

Not having much luck in love lately? Relationship falling apart? Maybe its those upside down dried flowers in you have hanging in your hallway, (oh so chic in Martha Stewart Land but the kiss of the death in Feng Shui circles.) Or maybe its the antique full length mirror in your bedroom ...

Feng Shui (pronounced Feng Shway) is the ancient Chinese art of rearranging design elements so that they harmonize with your environment. Several systems are used to determine what should go where to enhance the love life, but the one that applies to anyone reading this is the Pa Kua system. In Pa Kua, the southwest corner is the love sector of your home.

Feng Shui

First of all get a compass, and find out what exactly is in the Southwest corner of your building. Is there a bedroom there? Good. A toilet there? Bad. It means your romantic prospects are getting flushed away. Is your Southwest corner a badly lit storeroom full of clutter? Also bad. It means your love-life will be as messy as well. In fact, no matter what room that corner is located in, it now becomes your job to enhance it as best as you can, by getting rid of clutter and using decor. You are also going to rehaul the southwest corner of your bedroom to double your chances of attracting romance.

Feng Shui To Attract Love

What's in southwest corner of your bedroom? A closet? Bad. A vase full of beautiful flowers? Good. That will greatly enhance your chances of attracting a suitable partner.

To attract a partner, Feng Shui experts recommend putting a painting of peonies, or a vase of the flowers there. You could substitute any flower for the peony (as long as its not prickly like a cactus), but whatever you do make sure the flowers are fresh. The Chinese hate dead or dried flowers and would prefer that you have those rather than any kind of decay in a spot
that signifies your love life. Also lucky for romance, is a pair of wooden ducks or a painting of two ducks (as ducks mate for life) If you don't like how formal these ducks look, you can always do what I did and put two rubber ducks in your southwest corner.

Mirrors on the ceiling, especially full-length ones, or mirrors on the walls in the bedroom are a big no no, as they symbolize portals through which an interfering third party's energy can enter...Feng Shui masters don't like to invite voyeurism.

If you don't like Chinese decor, you could use my favourite westernized Feng Shui tool -- the Lava Lamp. Pink glowing goo moving up and down in your romance corner is sure to send out a sensuous vibe. Pictures or statues of loving couples or love friendly Goddesses such as Venus and Aphrodite would also help activate the love sector. As the southwest corner is symbolized by the earth element, it is also helpful to place crystals there, with the most suitable choice being rose quartz. If you want to go all out, you might want to also consider painting that corner or adjacent walls a bright red, also to symbolize passion. Whatever you do, don't go overboard...you could end up with a bedroom that looks like a Chinese brothel, or worse yet, invite somebody over who is familiar with Feng Shui who might go ³Hmmmm...I see ducks, flowers, crystals, red walls ...I better get out of here! This person is just a tad too desperate for me!

Good and Bad Feng Shui of a Television Set

Although the television can be a good source of information and education, from a Feng Shui standpoint it can also be an impediment depending on where it is located. Feng Shui is built on the premise that everything in your space has an impact, either positive or negative. You always want to feel empowered and to know what's happening around you when you're in your home. Due to the fact that typically people get "lost" in the TV or find themselves distracted by it, the television exerts a lot of influence over an individual. It sucks energy and time, much like a black hole. It is important to realize the potential impact of having a TV in certain rooms and how to manage its effects.

There are specific places where television are appropriate and others where a television should never be found:

Feng Shui

1. Never in the bedroom. A television in the bedroom has the potential of disturbing sleep. Whether the TV is on or not, it continues to draw out your energy and spirit, leaving you feeling drained in the morning. This situation can negatively impact not only your quality of sleep but also the quality of your dreams. Putting the TV in a cabinet with doors and closing them before going to sleep will minimize the challenges.

Good and Bad Feng Shui of a Television Set

2. No TV dinners. Eating in front of the television not only robs someone of their presence of mind, but also takes away the pleasure of eating. Rather than feeling empowered, you may come away feeling full in your stomach but empty in your spirit.

3. TV good in living room. Since the living room or family room is typically where you and your family would enjoy time together watching movies and programs, the television becomes an appropriate fixture. It provides opportunities for sharing experiences, laughing together and learning together.

4. TV bad in living room. If the living room is where you want to have family discussions and communicate with one another, then the TV can be an unwanted party. Removing it altogether would be one solution so that the intention of talking with one another will be foremost. Putting the television in a cabinet with the option of closing doors to keep it controlled may be the answer.

5. No TV near the front entrance. If the first think you see when you enter your home is the television, the Feng Shui message is clear about what you feel is important in your life. Move the TV to a different corner, cover it, or put it in a cabinet with doors to express a more welcome invitation to people coming into your home.

By knowing where the best places are for a television and how to appropriately and successfully integrate it in the areas where it is challenging, a television can be a welcome addition.

Feng Shui Beginners Tips - Remodel For Harmony

Feng Shui has just recently come to the forefront in the DIY home remodeling and decorating world. Do-it-yourself homeowners are learning about and implementing concepts from Feng Shui accordingly. As the economy experiences more problems and people become more nervous, this system of a healthy, more prosperous life becomes more attractive. In fact, many who laughed at the idea of Feng Shui just a few years ago are now solid converts!

Feng Shui is made of several absolutes, such as the Five Elements: water, wood, earth, metal and fire, the Colors: those which comprise the Yen & Yang expressions of mood, the Rules, and the Bagua Map: a plan of aligning your environment according to a prescribed template. All this may seem a bit restrictive but the outcome of implementing and following these directives may result in a more freeing, peaceful attitude. A little like learning to play the piano. The more time you spend learning and practicing, the freer you play.

Feng Shui

The Five Elements are important as each has its specific properties. Water is fluid, and associates with communication and career. Also, it has some connection to abundance, making it vital to incorporate into any plans for your home office or work. A small fountain or fish aquarium will also add a peaceful sound and a pleasant feeling. Wood brings a feeling of strength and is thought to enhance creativity. A wood desk, wood furniture, wood room divider or a wood-paneled wall brings positive energy.

Feng Shui Beginners Tips - Remodel For Harmony

Earth denotes permanence, stability and family home. There are three areas of your life Earth relates to; your health, your relationships and your awareness. Potted plants and "earthy" colors may bring you back "down to earth" and increase your stability, well-being and your effective learning. Metal is strength. It draws attention and transmits energy, bringing in sharpness and clarity. Metal accents, bowls and pots are advised. Fire is power. Power to help and to destroy! Passion, love, energy and danger. The enthusiasm to succeed may lead to aspirations of power. Perhaps a simple candle or two here.

Feng Shui Colors are important to understand when you redecorate or remodel and are specific to the room they appear in. For instance, colors used in your office will be different than those used in your bedroom. Each color also has very specific meanings and symbolism. Red relates to high energy, emotion and good luck while blues and greens are healing, growth and wealth. Yen & Yang are all about colors. Yin colors are those which are calming-blues, greens and "cooler" colors-while Yang colors stimulate and motivate. These, in turn, are "warmer" colors, such as orange, reds and yellows. Consider the purpose of each room and work your colors around that.

Feng Shui Rules revolve around simplicity. Although there are numerous definitions, Feng Shui Rules can be stated as that which calms, simplifies, organizes and energizes our lives. Feng Shui literally means "wind water" in Chinese and the rules are directed toward providing a flowing, free yet organized "Chi" when followed. Chi (or ch'i, pronounced k-eye) is the concept that everything has its own energy, which is constantly changing and flowing through space. Simplicity is the first rule, but its followed closely by "remove clutter!" Others are; incorporate natural elements, use calming colors, be aware of your surroundings, separate the living areas according to purpose and remove things which do not have a positive influence on you.

The Bagua Map (or simply Bagua) is important to be aware of, as it directs the actual room locations and flow of energy (chi) within the room and through the home. Not only does the location of each room matter, but the colors and elements in each room, as well. The Feng Shui Bagua Map also shows how the nine areas of our lives relate. These are; Wealth, Reputation, Love, Family, Health, Children, Knowledge, Career and Friends/Guides/Travel.

Thankfully, a complete understanding of Feng Shui is not as important as implementing as many of the Five Elements, Colors, Rules and the Bagua as we can. If you work at home and have a dedicated room or area for your office, there are things you can do to inflate the possibility of wealth. Changing the colors in the kitchen may bring about better nutrition and health. Rearrange the furniture to create energy. Feng Shui Wealth Enhancers For Dragon Year 2012-13!

In Feng Shui, various materials and objects can function as money-magnets or 'Wealth-Attractors' as they are more formally termed. The following article considers a number of these.

Mineral Money Magnets!

Feng Shui

Animal and Element!

Feng Shui Wealth Enhancers For Dragon Year 2012-13!

Gem, Crystal and Mineral money-magnets (wealth-attractors in Feng Shui terms) include Diamonds. Classified Yin Metal, in 5 Element/'Wuxing' Theory, these also symbolise the wealth associated with Water, 2012-13 Year Element. The Year Animal, the Dragon, is also associated with wealth (see below)! Quartz, Yin Metal, too, magnifies and amplifies energies of materials displayed alongside it. The Feng Shui principle of 'resemblance' means other minerals can also lend a hand here.

Diamonds and Crystals.

In Feng Shui, whilst Diamonds are classed as Yin (hidden) Metal, glass and plastic Copies (even photos etc) work as well as the 'Real Thing'. Quartz crystals in particular (also Yin Metal in 5 Element terms) or plastic copies enhance the energies and effects of other crystals they are displayed alongside. Herkimer Diamonds, quartz of a particularly pleasing variety, can function as both energy amplifier and wealth-attractor!

Location

From a 5 Element perspective, Dragon Year (2012-13) Yang Water Year Element, has strong associations with wealth. Diamonds (and Quartz) are considered Yin Metal, fortunate for those wishing to profit from their inherent attributes, as Metal produces/supports Water in Feng Shui. Diamonds and similar mineral 'wealth attractors' should be displayed/positioned appropriately. Use the N.W. sector of particular locations for this purpose.

'Resemblance'

This principle explains why real Diamonds are not essential and why glass or plastic ones work just as well (even pictures or photos of diamonds). These are obviously cheaper to acquire! Some large plastic Diamonds, strategically located at home, were obtained fortuitously from a defunct store promotion. An actor-friend supplied more from old stage-props, plus some very convincing fake Gold-bullion bars (Gold and Silver are 'Soft' Yin Metals).

Related Mineral money-magnets include iron-pyrites and Citrine, aka the "merchant stone", which, bringing good business-luck, abundance, fortune and wealth, is a potent wealth enhancer. The principle of resemblance (to Gold) applies in both cases

The 3-Legged Toad aka 'Money Frog'

The Money Frog, or "Chan Chu" in Chinese is a most auspicious money-making aid. Position it near cash registers, receptions, work desks and Piggy Banks etc.

The Dragon

In Feng Shui, the Dragon is most auspicious and magnificent, mightiest of creatures. For Millennia symbolising power, abundance and good fortune, the Dragon generates healthy 'Sheng Qi' bringing good fortune into homes, lives and workplaces. A small golden metal version can be a wealth-attracting Money-Dragon, attracting wealth and prosperity to your home or business.

Gold Ingots and Bars

Gold Ingots or "Yuen Bao" were used as currency by high officials and Emperors in ancient China. In Feng Shui terms, Gold bars and ingots are very auspicious wealth-attractors-fortunately the principle of 'resemblance' means that plastic copies can be as effective as the 'real thing'.

Old Chinese Coins tied together with red string or fabric (via the square hole conveniently provided in their centre) may also encourage the flow of prosperity into your life.

Buddha Figures

In Feng Shui Buddha brings good fortune and blessings to the home or business.

Pa Kua or 'Feng Shui' Mirrors

You can improve the energy flow around your home or business with an octagonal Pa Kua, with a mirror in its centre. This should be placed strategically in a window or above a door, looking outwards into the wider environment--not facing indoors!

Applications

So, Feng Shui tips for 2012-13? Display some (fake) diamonds on your desk or work-top. Add Feng Shui coins, a Three-Legged Toad, some fake Gold, Pyrites or Citrine, enhanced, if possible, with some quartz crystals! The South East 'Wealth' Sector of rooms and dwellings is the obvious display-location. Dragons can also be placed in the East.

Things to avoid? Dragon Years can be extremely volatile and Water the Year Element can represent the Emotions as well as Wealth. An element of caution needs to be built into your wealth-seeking this year,to ensure you don't get carried away by Dragon Year energies and events.

Year of the Dragon - 2012

In Chinese tradition, every year is dedicated to a particular animal. The 12 animals that are a part of this tradition are the Dragon, the Horse, the Monkey, the Rat, the Boar, the Rabbit, the Dog, the Rooster, the Ox, the Tiger, the Snake and the Ram. Each of these animals is believed to bestow its characteristics to individuals who are born in its year.

According to the Chinese astrology 2012 is the Year of the Dragon. And true to the animal's nature, the Year of the Dragon is expected to be marked with excitement, exhilaration, intensity and unpredictability. The drama and spirit of the dragon is expected to inject vitality, energy and unbridled enthusiasm which could easily lead individuals to throwing caution to the wind. It is especially important to take care this year, and avoid unnecessary risks that could lead to tragedy.

Feng Shui

The dragon year is a special year for excellence and Chinese astrology dictates that dragon people are expected to excel during this year. The Year of the Dragon is special in many ways. For one, you will find that the dragon is the only unreal animal featured in the Chinese zodiac year. What's more, the dragon is revered and has a special place in Chinese astrology. In fact, the dragon is generally of special significance to Chinese people.

Year of the Dragon - 2012

History

The Year of the Dragon can trace its origins to over 4,000 years ago. During this time, China was formed by two very large tribes and many smaller tribes. An animal represented each one of these tribes. When the two larger tribes decided to unite, they decided that their emblem would be the dragon as a symbol of power. Today, Han Chinese still call themselves descendants of the dragon.

The Dragon

Because its body comprises of parts from different types of animals including fish, tiger, eagle and snake, the dragon is regarded as a powerful and mighty king in Chinese astrology. Unlike the perception in the west of a threatening evil being, the Chinese dragon is regarded more as a symbol of power, protection, authority and superiority. As a result, in many places in China, you will find numerous sculptures and carvings of dragons.

The Dragon Personality and Dragon People

Chinese astrology deems a dragon person as special. As such, individuals who are born in the Chinese Year of the Dragon typically stand out and enjoy a status befitting a dragon. Such persons are generally regarded as being wise and powerful. They are not shy, but instead command respect and attention with their passion, courage and self-confidence. In short, dragon people have a certain aura about them and seem to enjoy very good fortune.

Dragon people are generally regarded as doers as they are able to achieve power by taking action and getting things done. These individuals at best will have pioneering spirits, but at worst, their foolhardiness will easily get them into trouble. Dragon individuals are smart, enterprising and generally have a wicked sense of humor. If you want to remain updated on the latest trends, consult dragon people as they have a flair for fashion. Just as the fire-breathing dragon, dragon people are generally thought to be hotheads. It is therefore wise to steer clear of them in the event that they get angry!

In contrast however, because dragons have soft underbellies, dragon people are thought to have soft spots as well. As such, you may find a dragon person easily angered, yet capable of great compassion for those who are in need of their help. This contrast is further illustrated by dragon people who can be confronting, but if you touch their soft hearts, they quickly become worthwhile allies. In addition, they are generous - although this is a positive thing, it can easily turn problematic when they become foolhardy with money.

Dragons have long tongues which they often bare and make visible. In turn, dragon people are generally said to have sharp tongues that make them say things that can be very sarcastic and biting to whomever they are directed to.

2012: The Year of the Dragon

The Year of the Dragon 2012 will begin on January 23rd this year, which marks the beginning of 15 days of celebration. January 23rd is actually the Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year which typically occurs in the early months of January or February.

In accordance with the Chinese horoscope 2012 will be ushering in the Water Dragon. The water works in calming the innate fire of the dragon. As such, water dragon people are more open to others opinions and are better able to channel their charisma into leadership qualities. Celebrities born in the Year of the Dragon include Al Pacino, John Lennon, Matt Dillon, Marlene Dietrich and Ringo Starr.

If you were born in a Chinese Year of the Dragon, then according to feng shui 2012 is your year. But what does this mean? Well, first, you should double your efforts in whatever you do - be it your work, studies or any other projects you may be working on. And once you do this, you will find that your natural abilities and talents will easily stand out and enable you to achieve great results. It is also important to watch your temper in 2012 to avoid ruining all your hard work this year.

The Dragon and Love

Because dragons are passionate, they tend to fall in and out of love just as quickly. With their charm and charisma, they are able to easily draw the attention and admiration of individuals of the opposite sex which is what dragon people crave. While they tend to treat love like a game, when they meet the right partner who is strong enough to match their strength, they can settle down.

Wealth in the Year of the Dragon

If you are looking to start a business or begin a new project, the Year of the Dragon is the time to do it. This is because money is more easily accessible for everyone this year - whether you earn, borrow or receive it as a gift. However, avoid unreasonable expenditures as you will have to account for these once the Year of the Dragon comes to an end.

Feng Shui Tips for Home Interiors in Dragon Year 2012-13

Introduction

Organise your environment according to basic Feng Shui principles and soon positive results appear. High expertise isn't required-just get the basics right, implement some 'tips' and you are underway. Extensively used in both homes and offices world-wide, particularly in China and South East Asia, Feng Shui is increasingly popular in the West because of its inbuilt benefits.

Feng Shui

Entrance Halls
Feng Shui Tips for Home Interiors in Dragon Year 2012-13
Ideal 'Ming Tang' (Bright Hall) appearance means these should be well lit by day and by night and uncluttered to facilitate Qi-flow. Mechanical door-bells have the same energising effect as wind-chimes but before you install these be sure you like their sound!
Water (Year Element 2012-14) supports Wood so wooden wind-chimes with any number of tubes (except four) are ideal to deploy.
Stairways
Doors ideally, should be at right-angles to descending staircases. Otherwise a sudden fall in status or position is likely.
Windows
The 'eyes' of the building, these should be clear and free from cracked glass which has negative connotations in Feng Shui. Should sharp-edged 'poison arrows' face windows, keep these shut and use drawn curtains as a screen.
Ceilings
High well lit ceilings are ideal as low poorly lit ones cause headaches and depressions. Exposed beams and uneven ceilings can have similar effects and one should avoid eating sleeping and sitting beneath these. Suspended ceilings can overcome some of these problems.
Shelves
Avoid sharp-edged shelving with pointed corners (and especially sitting with your back to these) as they can correspond to interior poison arrows. Position shelving as low as possible.
Tables
Avoid sharp-edged square and rectangular dining-tables in favour of round or oval designs. Do not position the dining table directly underneath the upstairs toilet to avoid unfortunate and unhealthy leaks from above.
Mirrors
Be aware of what these reflect into the space concerned (e.g. the toilet pedestal or trash-cans outside). Ideal views (e.g. of water or garden flowers) can come from outside or pictures hung strategically in internal locations. Avoid having mirrors directly facing the bed in the bedroom. Mirrors in the dining room, reflecting food on the table, however, may convey notions of abundance.
Beds
Beds should not be at right-angles next to or face the bed-room door (the Mortuary Position). Ideally there should be a wall at one side for protection. Avoid sleeping with your head underneath a window.
The Kitchen
Neither Washing Machine, Refrigerator nor sink should be immediately adjacent to your cooker (as Fire and Water would be in conflict). Position your cooker separately elsewhere. Store kitchen knives out of sight when these are not in use.
Flowers and Plants in the Home
Whilst fresh flowers on display energise internal environments, dried flowers are dead and desiccated-artificial plastic varieties are preferable as these simulate life. Spiky Cacti are considered sources of Shar Qi in Feng Shui and should be avoided also Japanese Bonsai plants, as the latter represent stunted and retarded growth.
Overall
The above basic recommendations 'Cures' and tips represent basic principles of Feng Shui which are easily applied. Those interested in exploring this field in more depth should go on to consider the 5 Elements or 'Wuxing' implications of internal decor, design and the placement of objects.

The Healing Power of Earth Energy and Feng Shui

In our modern age of technology, the Green movement is urging us to re-examine our relationship with the Earth and how we can get back to basics and benefit more from the natural environment.

Our Earth is a solid, grounding force giving us a feeling of security. It is "terra firma" under our feet. Its revolutions create gravity and secure us to the planet. In traditional Feng Shui practice, we use the earth element to "ground" particular energies inside or outside a home. For example, extra earth is often placed between a house and an electrical transformer on a telephone pole to neutralize excess static electricity that might create what is known as negative energy or "sha". Likewise, it is a common practice for fuel tankers to load flammable fuel on what is known as a grounding pad that will neutralize any positive electrical ions or sparks that might start a fire. It is also a standard practice in Feng Shui to create raised earth or a "mountain" remedy in front of a home to help balance and support the "people" aspect of many houses. The earth remedy is protective and includes anything made of mineral composition including clay, brick, ceramic, concrete, cement, stone, sand or stucco.

Feng Shui

Most homes are built on concrete slabs or footings giving a structure strong stability. Homes that are raised above the ground, allowing water or air to pass freely underneath, are considered to be "destabilized" and can affect an occupant's health negatively. The type of soil a home is built on is also important. Soil compaction and composition are looked at carefully before a home is constructed. The soil around a home ideally should be able to stick together allowing compaction which can hold a greater weight load. Soil that can be compacted also shows an ability to hold moisture as this is the optimal kind of land to live on. Soil that is too sandy or clay has more difficulty in nourishing plant life. Plant life helps retain moisture, creates oxygen and also holds the land together protectively with their roots, preventing erosion.

The Healing Power of Earth Energy and Feng Shui

Earth tone colors and shades of brown also have a psychological stabilizing effect on us as well. We love chocolate, our morning coffee or teas, and the comfort of fresh baked bread or pastries. Skin tones too come in all shades of brown from the lightest pinkish tans to deep mahoganies and ebonies. Skin colors are reflections of the earth. All colors, when mixed with their opposite hue, will create the thousands of shades of brown we find so comforting and familiar.

The Earth is our physical mother in a profound sense and we literally benefit by re-connecting with her on many levels. Many spiritual practices start with "grounding" exercises in which we re-establish our connection to the earth to strengthen our bodies, as our vessel, in turn empowering our spiritual exercises. Yin and yang balance, very important in Feng Shui practice, is constantly being harmonized by the Earth's energy and rhythms. The Sun provides a plethora of positive ions (yang) that circulate freely in our atmosphere above a primarily negatively charged Earth (yin). Positive ions are known to irritate us and create anxiety --and negative ions can restore our good moods and boost our health. The Earth is our primary generator of these healthful negative ions often called vitamins of the air.

It is very interesting to note that Sunspot activity (magnetic anomalies) on the Sun's surface is very regular and occurs about every 11 years. When Sunspots happen, they cause solar flares to explode into space towards the Earth and our ionosphere captures these extra positive ions which then circulate freely in the atmosphere. These charged particles give us the Aurora Borealis. When sunspots increase, activism and wars also increase especially during the 5 year peak periods of sunspot activity, and this has been charted for hundreds of years. Our biggest and most destructive wars occur during these peak sunspot periods. Although the cause of wars have not been proven scientifically, the theory is that an abundance of these extra positive ions increase testosterone levels, making humans more aggressive and anxious. The Earth--and the natural environment-- are our richest source and biggest generator of the opposite polarity ion. You can get a calming dose of negative ions by simply taking off your shoes and walking barefoot on soil, grass or sand. The health benefits are amazing --besides the earth-- pine trees, salt lamps and water resources like waterfalls or the pounding ocean surf on sand are all great producers of negative ions. Take off your flip-flops next time you are at the beach and see if you don't feel better.

In the smaller micro-climate, when we work all day in a room full of computers and electronic equipment, that extra dose of positive ions makes us more irritable and anxious. In our technological age, there are so many devices which create an excess of draining positive ions. Positive ion generators include TVs, computers, iPhones, electronics, wireless appliances, heaters, ovens, air conditioners, dust, pollution and car exhaust to name a few.

The stabilizing energy of the earth will heal many of our modern day ills if we can just get back to nature's basics. So kick off your shoes and start enjoying the natural environment once again and get grounded! The earth can naturally provide a wealth of benefits if we just embrace it. A classically trained Feng Shui consultant can advise you of the best areas in your home to use the earth element and guide you in making the best choices to balance and promote your home's natural healing energy. The skillful use of earth is very important in traditional Feng Shui and can boost your life in many positive ways.

Feng Shui Animal Symbolism

The role of both real and mythological animals is referred to frequently in feng shui theory and folklore. In many books, there is a description of an ideal house, which has a turtle behind it, a phoenix bird in front of it, and a dragon and tiger on either side. These four animals are symbolic of land and building formations. For example, to have a turtle behind the house for support or protection is a metaphor for a larger structure or a literal mountain. To have a bird in the front is symbolic for a much smaller land formation.

There is a concept that "chi" (air currents) move around a property and the higher land form in back (the turtle) protects the house, while a smaller land form in front (bird) helps the house receive the proper amount of chi. Like the edge of a bowl, the phoenix in front helps shore up or contain energy near the entrance of the house.

Feng Shui

Then, the tiger and dragon on each side of the house represent neighboring houses, buildings, or real hills. These forms act as a way of protecting the house. In a general sense, a house that is not surrounded by other structures or land formations is a bit vulnerable and overly exposed to the elements. Some people take these references to the animals literally and they will place figurines of these creatures around their home for good luck and protection. At least one feng shui master I have studied with has alluded to the possibility that these animals also represent the shapes of certain important constellations.

Feng Shui Animal Symbolism

Another popular feng shui creature is the fish. Fish symbolize long life in Chinese culture, so paintings and sculptures of them are seen as lucky. In the actual application of feng shui, fish in tanks and ponds are just an excuse to help circulate water. It is the water, which is the real remedy. But because feng shui comes from a very superstitious culture, the number of fish and the color of the fish in the aquarium have taken on exaggerated significance. As well, different types of birds are supposed to be omens for the occupants if the bird is seen flying by or creating a nest on the roof.

The image of a horse can't help but to symbolize travel and movement. One folk remedy is to place a Horse figurine facing the door for occupants who want to sell their home.

Lions and tigers are considered powerful, ferocious animals. Representations of them in pictures or sculptures should be done with caution, according to people who adhere to these animal cures. You may have seen stone lions flanking the entrance or stairs of a large building, but they would be considered inappropriate for a residence.

One of the Zodiac signs in Chinese astrology is a Tiger. Women who are the sign of the Tiger are considered fiercely independent and have a more difficult time settling down with a man. February is the month of the Tiger and according to auto insurance statistics, more car accidents occur in the month of February. This would be consistent with the Chinese interpretation that the fast-moving Tiger is also accident-prone.

It is interesting to note some of the cultural differences in how we relate to animals. For instance, in Chinese astrology a person born in the Year of the Rat can be a very intelligent person and a Snake person can easily be interested in metaphysics and spirituality. In the West, we think of the rat and snake as being sneaky and conniving. In some religions there is a belief that all human beings have lived at least one incarnation as every type of animal, and therefore we have an unconscious understanding of what these animals are capable of in their personalities and strengths.

Some birds are more monogamous than people, so there is a notion that putting up pictures of lovebirds in the bedroom will attract true love. These kinds of things can work as placebos, but are not considered the most sophisticated feng shui remedies.

Elephants have a reputation in both Chinese and Indian culture for attracting wealth. Images of trunk-up elephants often adorn the homes of people hoping the elephant will be a lucky image for them.

There are many more animals that have meaning in Chinese culture and/or specific to feng shui. Supposedly, a metal Rooster placed in the proper location can stop someone from committing an adulterous affair. Taken out of context, these animal symbols can seem strange, but they are really not much stranger than the meanings we attach to some inanimate objects in the Western world. Be it a country's flag, a car hood ornament, a designer label, or a religious sign, we place importance on many symbols that go unnoticed or unrecognized by other cultures.

Many people are surprised to find out that I do not prescribe any of these animal symbols as feng shui remedies. While I understand the psychological relief that they may provide, I do not feel that these symbols can change the energetic composition of a room. And with symbols ultimately being very personal, (like our dreams), I don't see how they would work for everyone in the same manner.

Using Mirrors To Feng Shui Your Place

Mirrors are wonderful as both functional and decorative pieces hanging in your home. They come in handy for a number of different reasons, including getting dressed for the day. They help create depth and light in any part of your home. They are ideal when you have a really small space that you want to enlarge. Mirrors are also extremely critical when it comes to Feng Shui. People use mirrors as a way to alter, move, and attract certain energies into their houses.

In Feng Shui, you place mirrors to correct any problem you are having in your home. You will need to follow strict laws on where to hang them. By placing a mirror across from something wonderful you can bring a positive change to your energy flow. Position a mirror across from a beautiful landscape or piece of art. This is to help bring more of this stunning energy into your house. The best areas to hang mirrors for good Feng Shui are the east corner for health and family, the southeast side for wealth and abundance, and the north side for career and life path.

Feng Shui

Don't place a mirror directly across from a door or window. This can bring unwanted outside energy into your house. You also do not want to hang two mirrors facing each other. This will cause stuck energy between them. You will feel restless in your home. You also should never use broken, dusty, or unframed mirrors. Don't ever position a mirror on the wall across from your bed or on the south side of your house.

Using Mirrors To Feng Shui Your Place

As long as your oval wall mirrors are framed, look and size will not matter much. Be unique and fun to match your favorite looks. There are an unlimited number of options such as vintage and antique mirrors, black or round white mirrors, or sleek modern mirrors. Feng Shui papers often discuss convex mirrors and bagua mirrors. Convex mirrors are known in Feng Shui as the watchful eye. They deflect speedy moving chi, and keep your home from being overpowered by bad features outside of your house. Bagua mirrors are to be hung outdoors only. They keep negative energy from entering your house.

Feng Shui can be a fun and unique way to bring positive energy in and decorate your home. Hanging a mirror in the right place can be both functional and beautiful. Mirrors are useful for getting dressed and making a small area appear bigger. The ideal mirror placement brings a nice energy into your home and life. You can get mirrors everywhere, including the internet and big chain box retailers.
