Silver Chains - Real Or Fake? How to Tell

Gold is out, and silver is in! This has been the fashion trend for the past few years. Indeed, while sterling silver chains do not rival its golden counterpart in terms of value, it does have in terms of popularity.

Silver Chains Equals Quality

Bulova

These days, getting silver chains can be rather costly. But if you are one of the many people who give importance to quality over price, this can be a very good investment. The popularity of silver chains and other accessories have given rise to silver plated jewelry pieces and, unfortunately, some that are sold as sterling silver pieces even if they are actually not.

Silver Chains - Real Or Fake? How to Tell

To make sure that the silver chain you are getting is made of. Sterling Silver, or a cheap fake, here are some ways on how to check your jewelry piece.

Check for the Mark

Silver jewelry pieces, including silver chains would often be branded by a small "925" marking. This is usually place on the jewelry pieces where they are less likely seen. In the case of rings, and some bracelets, the 925 marking is usually found on the inside part of the ring or bracelet. For .925 silver chains, the marking is usually found on the clasp of the chain. These markings are extremely small and oftentimes, you may need a magnifying glass to check this out.

Acid Test

Since there are a lot of cheap imitations posing as sterling silver chains and other silver accessories and items, another way to test this is through a nitric acid test. You can ask your local jeweler to do the nitric test before you or you can do this at home. To do this, briskly rub a certain portion of the silver chain or silver item that you would like to test. It is a good idea to do this on a part of the silver piece that is not easily noticeable. This would allow you to break the plating on top of most silver pieces which is placed to prevent it from easily tarnishing. Apply a few drops of nitric acid onto the scratch surface and check the results. The color of the liquid would tell you what kind of silver it is. If the liquid turns into a cloudy grey color, you are guaranteed that your silver piece is made out of sterling silver. If it turns green, it means that it is only silver plated.

Being on the Safe Side

To make sure that you are only given genuine silver chains and other sterling silver jewelry pieces, make sure that you only go to a recognized jeweler that specializes in sterling silver pieces. If you do plan on buying silver chains and other silver pieces over the Internet, it is a good idea do some research on the credibility of these online stores. Sterling silver does not come in cheap, and more often than not, the prices placed by these jewelers can be rather shocking. Nevertheless, it would make a great piece of jewelry that you can enjoy for a lifetime

History of the Wittnauer Watches

There isn't anything as endearing to the public as a rags to riches story and the history behind the Wittnauer Watch Company is one such story. Imagine if you will a young 16 year old Swiss immigrant arriving in New York City in 1872 with an already well developed ability to produce high quality watches. The story only gets better from here.

Young Mr. Wittnauer begins working for his brother in law J. Eugene Robert. Mr. Robert is an importer of fine Swiss watches. With the help of his younger brother, Albert Wittnauer decides there is a need for a watch designed with all of the durability and function the American public demands. Much to everyone's except Albert's surprise, the watches are an instant hit with his brother in law's clients.

Bulova

By 1890, the company is formally establishes when Mr. Robert gives the title to Albert Wittnauer and the A. Wittnauer Company is born. All of the Wittnauer siblings are involved in the budding business. They make the bright decision to employ the best and most talented of watch making engineers. The company also stays ahead of the game and begins to cater to the ever growing world of exploration. It is their timepieces that are found on trips made by navigators, explorers, and astronomers.

History of the Wittnauer Watches

In terms of the great global exploration taking place, the A. Wittnauer Co. becomes even further involved with the Navy for early aviation tests. From there the world's most exciting people in regards to the budding fields of aviation, astrology, and navigation go to this company for the most accurate, well made field devices and watches. Of the Wittnauer Company and products, noted horologist Marvin E. Whitney writes, "No one company has been more involved in the design and production of so many different types of navigational timepieces and been involved in so many history making expeditions..."

With the death of her last brother Emile, Martha Wittnauer is left holding the reins of this amazing company in 1916. At the time, she is one of the few CEOs of a major American company. Martha does continue the amazing work she and her brothers began years before and continues to bring success to the family company. She was particularly fond of encouraging the aviation navigating instruments that had helped make the company so successful in the first place.

That is a brief synopsis of the Wittnauer Company's early history. The events and people who originally formed the company were to have a tremendous influence on the rest of its history. The advantages made by the company were continued in 1949 with the release of a self winding watch. It was designed to be slimmer and more durable than the other self winding watches of the time.

The Wittnauer Company has retained its reputation for extraordinary timepieces and is still a major player on the watch making scene and is now part of the Bulova family. Fans of their products cite the beauty, accurate function, and innovative designs to be the reasons they keep coming back for more.

Zodiac Watches

Zodiac watches offer a beautiful display, accuracy to the highest level and they are well known and respected watches in the industry. Zodiac watches date back to 1882, making them some of the oldest designed watches still in existence today. Ariste Calame first set up his workshop in 1882, and his goal at the time was to specialize in watches that would offer something useful and unique to the industry. These Swiss made watches would do much more. Soon, they became known as Zodiac watches.

In the timeframe between 1908 - 1930, Ariste Calame will patent his Zodiac brand. But, during this timeframe, no wristwatches themselves were created. Rather, the business was used to manufacturer calibers and movements. Those elements where then used to produce pocket watches. The first pocket watch offered by the Zodiac line was offered in 1924, and it had caliber 1617 movements within it. It was an extra flat pocket watch, which it gained fame for. In 1930, the Zodiac watch company would patent a method of shock proofing that used a z shaped spring clip that fit over the balance. And, in this year, the first of its Swiss automatic watches was launched.

In 1932, Zodiac watches launches another watch, this time its first Swiss analog quartz watch. It would include the famous beta 21 calibre in it. Five years later, a new watch innovation was offered by Zodiac. That was the 10.5 Ligne and 8 day wristwatch movement. The Basel Watch Fair, a very prestigious event that all watch makers took pride in, was the launch place of Zodiac's Astrograhic watch, in 1949. This was a self winding watch that has the ability to reserve gauge measuring hours of power. The Zodiac model was one of two that had the ability to reserve collection like this at that time.

Zodiac Watches

In 1953, the company looked for other ways to develop and follow the trends (if not setting them.) In this year, they launched the Sea Wolf, which was the first diver's watch that offers serious results. It was the first diver's watch to be manufactured for the general population, too. The Super Sea Wolf would be a later edition of this watch and would be able to handle water pressure has at 750 meters.

In the 1960's, the Zodiac watch line added a 24 hour GMT hand to the Sea World watch and it also introduced its newest line of fashionable and functional watches: the aerospace. The Aerospace Jet was introduced in 1962 and was very unique: it had 24 hands that only traversed the dial one time every 24 hours. The company also produced the first Swiss electronic watch called the Dynotron in 1968. In 1970, the first Swiss analog quartz watch would be launched by Zodiac called the Beta 21 Calibre, which would become a famous watch line for years to come.

In the 1970's and 1980's Zodiac watches continued to astound. The company introduced the first LCD watches and obtained the chronometer certificate. Later, in 2004, the vintage inspired watches were re-launched, including the Sea Dragon and V World that were some of the most vintage in style, but they added contemporary touches to them. Today, the Zodiac watch line continues to offer new and interesting innovation with each release of a watch collection.

A Personal Review of Longines Watches

I have long been a fan of Longines watches. Longines are impeccably made and stylish timepieces. Longines watches are affordable Swiss watches for the average consumer, but being affordable doesn't mean you have to forgo quality.

Longines have been making quality watches since 1832. In 1912 Longines made history in the world of sports by introducing the concept of an electric wire, which at the start and finish of a race, activated and stopped a timing mechanism. This innovation in timekeeping by Longines has ensured that Longines have been appointed official timekeepers at many of the world's top sporting events. Longines sports watches reflect this sporting history. But Longines also make many elegant watches for both men and women; I think Longines watches for women are especially beautiful. The current collection of Longines watches reflect this.

Bulova

The DolceVita collection by Longines is simple and elegant in design. The face is rectangular with simple hour markers. The DolceVita dial comes in black, white or pink mother of pearl. The case comes in stainless steel, although you can buy a gold case set with 32 Top Wesselton diamonds (0.32 carat) - this comes with matching gold bracelet. Stainless steel versions can also be bought with inlaid diamonds and come with either stainless steel bracelets or white or black lacquered leather strap. Some versions of the Longines DolceVita can be worn by men, but it is as an elegant ladies watch that the Longines DolceVita truly comes into its own.

A Personal Review of Longines Watches

Longines claim that the Evidenza is invocative of the 1920s. I feel there is some justification in this as the facia of the watch does seem to be old fashioned - but not out-of-date. The tonneau shape of the case goes back to a Longines model dating from 1911; the tonneau shape being an oval with flattened ends. The Longines Evidenza is suitable for both men and women. The casing is stainless steel although there is a ladies gold version set 44, 0.22 carat, diamonds. The Longines Evidenza comes with either a quartz or self-winding movement. My favourite Evidenza is the one that comes in a stainless steel case with dark brown alligator strap, enhanced by 12 blue painted Arabic numerals. This model also features a moon-phase display with a 31-day calendar at 6 o'clock as well as day of the week and month apertures at 12 o'clock - a very nice watch.

The Longines BelleArti is a truly elegant ladies watch. I am fortunate enough to have been able to buy my wife a Longines BelleArti watch for her birthday. The BelleArti range are simple and understated, evoking memories of the Art Deco movement of the 1920s. The dial comes in black, silver or mother-of-pearl. All dials feature 11 Arabic figures, a second subdial at 6 o'clock and "Cathedral" hands. Some models are available with inlaid diamonds - my wife's watch is without. The casing of the Longines BelleArti is rectangular with a sight curvature of the sides, lending the whole watch a very feminie feel.

La Grande Classique de Longines styling calls much upon the earlier design traditions of Longines. The casing is a simple circle and comes in either stainless steel or gold - some models come with inlaid diamonds. As you might expect, for this classical style of watch, the faces come in black, white or mother of pearl. The Logines Grande Classique is definitely for thise of prefer the look of a more traditional watch.

The Longines LungoMare is for those who like a more modern looking watch. There is a ladies verion of this watch. The casing is round and comes only in stainless steel. The LungoMare is also water resitant to 100 meters. I really like the LungoMare. It's pure understated style. It avoids stylistic gimmicks, such as big crowns, over-sized hands and cluttered facia. This watch rivals such makes as Breitling, Tag Heuer and Rolex but priced at a more realistic price for consumers.

Longines also make the the Lingbergh watch. It commemorates the first flight across the Atlantic by Charles Lindbergh. Personally I don't like commemorative watches and I'm not a fan of the design of this watch either.

The Longines Master collection appeals to those who want the most functionality out of their watch. Most watches in this collection come with complications, self-winding mechanical movements beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, with a rated power reserve of 42 hours. Many also come with a chronograph function. I feel the Longines Master collection is for those who want the best from what Longines has to offer.

All longines watches come with sapphire glass and superb movements. And Longines offer a broad range of designs to choose from, unlike other swiss watch makers. I like Longines watches: Longines make owning a quality Swiss affordable for the average consumer.
