History of Bulova Watches

From the days of when the only clocks available where sun dials to the times of the pocket watch, and through to the present day, people have always been obsessed with keeping track of the time. Like any other profession, the watch making industry has worked hard to improve the methods they use and the quality of the products they put on the market. The general public has seen watches go from the traditional wheel balance and hairspring technology to the more advanced quartz, and finally to the creation of purely digital watches. Each advance was designed to outdo the competitors and give people the absolute finest in wrist timepieces.

There have been many famous watch companies and creators, but one of the most famous is the Bulova Watch Company. Over the years, this company has acquired a reputation for luxury and precision in their watch products. A little background history makes the story much more interesting. As with many companies, the story of the Bulova watch company starts out modestly. A young man by the name of Joseph Bulova opens a small, humble jewelry shop in New York City on Maiden Lane. The year is 1875 and he is a 23 year old Czech immigrant to the U.S. Business progresses nicely, but nothing to get excited about until 1911 when this enterprising young man begins to manufacture and sell bedroom, and table clocks, and finely made pocket watches. The public reacts positively to the new items and sales boom at an amazing rate.

Bulova

The Bulova Watch Company didn't stop there. Its owner knew a good thing when he saw it and in 1912, the first plant dedicated to the production of his incredible timepieces was opened in Bienne, Switzerland. This plant focused on the production of the watch components and placing the assemblies into the final jeweled movements. All of this took place before the advent of the conventional wristwatch, as we now know them in the present day.

History of Bulova Watches

Mr. Bulova didn't have long to wait. With the beginning of World War I, the popularity of wristwatches, as opposed to pocket watches, took off. It was much easier for troops to have their watches literally handy than hidden in a pocket. Again, the Bulova Company was there to provide what the public demanded. Joseph Bulova took it one step further and designed a line of men's watches set in jeweled casings. Considering his first passion was jewelry, it makes sense that he made this innovative move. The year was 1919 and the world set posed for more extravagant watches.

As history tells us, the road from this point for Mr. Bulova and his company is paved with gold. In 1923 the name Bulova Watch Company, Inc. is put into place. The watch world is revolutionized again with the beginning of a watch parts making precision system that makes every Bulova watch compatible with any other Bulova make or model wristwatch. In other words, watch repair became much simpler and more cost effective because the repair people could use any part from any Bulova watch to repair another. That kind of attention to detail had never been seen before.

Just one short year later, the Bulova Watch Company finally remembers the ladies. It introduces a full line of women's watches complete with diamond accents. It was the "Roaring Twenties" and people of the time were all about luxury and beautiful things. A Bulova watch fit right in.

The Bulova Watch Company continued to take advantage of the events going on around them and made sure to keep up with the times. For example, to honor the famous transatlantic solo flight of Charles Lindbergh, the company produced a series of Lone Eagle watches packaged with a picture of the famous pilot. The company ships 5000 of these commemorative watches. The supply sold out in 3 days. In total, 50000 Charles Lindbergh watches were sold. It was this kind of forward thinking that made the company the huge success that it was and is.

In 1935, the founder of the company, Joseph Bulova dies. Despite this sad event, the company continued its upward swing. In the early 1960's the Bulova Watch Company's biggest claim to fame is released to the world. It was a totally unique watch called the Accutron. This watch was made using the technology of the tuning fork. It kept better time than anything that had been made to date and was used on many NASA flights including the famous Apollo expedition.

With such a productive and colorful history, there is no wonder that the Bulova Watch Company continues to be such a stellar example of customer service and watch making innovation.

Silver Chains - Real Or Fake? How to Tell

Gold is out, and silver is in! This has been the fashion trend for the past few years. Indeed, while sterling silver chains do not rival its golden counterpart in terms of value, it does have in terms of popularity.

Silver Chains Equals Quality

Bulova

These days, getting silver chains can be rather costly. But if you are one of the many people who give importance to quality over price, this can be a very good investment. The popularity of silver chains and other accessories have given rise to silver plated jewelry pieces and, unfortunately, some that are sold as sterling silver pieces even if they are actually not.

Silver Chains - Real Or Fake? How to Tell

To make sure that the silver chain you are getting is made of. Sterling Silver, or a cheap fake, here are some ways on how to check your jewelry piece.

Check for the Mark

Silver jewelry pieces, including silver chains would often be branded by a small "925" marking. This is usually place on the jewelry pieces where they are less likely seen. In the case of rings, and some bracelets, the 925 marking is usually found on the inside part of the ring or bracelet. For .925 silver chains, the marking is usually found on the clasp of the chain. These markings are extremely small and oftentimes, you may need a magnifying glass to check this out.

Acid Test

Since there are a lot of cheap imitations posing as sterling silver chains and other silver accessories and items, another way to test this is through a nitric acid test. You can ask your local jeweler to do the nitric test before you or you can do this at home. To do this, briskly rub a certain portion of the silver chain or silver item that you would like to test. It is a good idea to do this on a part of the silver piece that is not easily noticeable. This would allow you to break the plating on top of most silver pieces which is placed to prevent it from easily tarnishing. Apply a few drops of nitric acid onto the scratch surface and check the results. The color of the liquid would tell you what kind of silver it is. If the liquid turns into a cloudy grey color, you are guaranteed that your silver piece is made out of sterling silver. If it turns green, it means that it is only silver plated.

Being on the Safe Side

To make sure that you are only given genuine silver chains and other sterling silver jewelry pieces, make sure that you only go to a recognized jeweler that specializes in sterling silver pieces. If you do plan on buying silver chains and other silver pieces over the Internet, it is a good idea do some research on the credibility of these online stores. Sterling silver does not come in cheap, and more often than not, the prices placed by these jewelers can be rather shocking. Nevertheless, it would make a great piece of jewelry that you can enjoy for a lifetime

History of the Wittnauer Watches

There isn't anything as endearing to the public as a rags to riches story and the history behind the Wittnauer Watch Company is one such story. Imagine if you will a young 16 year old Swiss immigrant arriving in New York City in 1872 with an already well developed ability to produce high quality watches. The story only gets better from here.

Young Mr. Wittnauer begins working for his brother in law J. Eugene Robert. Mr. Robert is an importer of fine Swiss watches. With the help of his younger brother, Albert Wittnauer decides there is a need for a watch designed with all of the durability and function the American public demands. Much to everyone's except Albert's surprise, the watches are an instant hit with his brother in law's clients.

Bulova

By 1890, the company is formally establishes when Mr. Robert gives the title to Albert Wittnauer and the A. Wittnauer Company is born. All of the Wittnauer siblings are involved in the budding business. They make the bright decision to employ the best and most talented of watch making engineers. The company also stays ahead of the game and begins to cater to the ever growing world of exploration. It is their timepieces that are found on trips made by navigators, explorers, and astronomers.

History of the Wittnauer Watches

In terms of the great global exploration taking place, the A. Wittnauer Co. becomes even further involved with the Navy for early aviation tests. From there the world's most exciting people in regards to the budding fields of aviation, astrology, and navigation go to this company for the most accurate, well made field devices and watches. Of the Wittnauer Company and products, noted horologist Marvin E. Whitney writes, "No one company has been more involved in the design and production of so many different types of navigational timepieces and been involved in so many history making expeditions..."

With the death of her last brother Emile, Martha Wittnauer is left holding the reins of this amazing company in 1916. At the time, she is one of the few CEOs of a major American company. Martha does continue the amazing work she and her brothers began years before and continues to bring success to the family company. She was particularly fond of encouraging the aviation navigating instruments that had helped make the company so successful in the first place.

That is a brief synopsis of the Wittnauer Company's early history. The events and people who originally formed the company were to have a tremendous influence on the rest of its history. The advantages made by the company were continued in 1949 with the release of a self winding watch. It was designed to be slimmer and more durable than the other self winding watches of the time.

The Wittnauer Company has retained its reputation for extraordinary timepieces and is still a major player on the watch making scene and is now part of the Bulova family. Fans of their products cite the beauty, accurate function, and innovative designs to be the reasons they keep coming back for more.

Zodiac Watches

Zodiac watches offer a beautiful display, accuracy to the highest level and they are well known and respected watches in the industry. Zodiac watches date back to 1882, making them some of the oldest designed watches still in existence today. Ariste Calame first set up his workshop in 1882, and his goal at the time was to specialize in watches that would offer something useful and unique to the industry. These Swiss made watches would do much more. Soon, they became known as Zodiac watches.

In the timeframe between 1908 - 1930, Ariste Calame will patent his Zodiac brand. But, during this timeframe, no wristwatches themselves were created. Rather, the business was used to manufacturer calibers and movements. Those elements where then used to produce pocket watches. The first pocket watch offered by the Zodiac line was offered in 1924, and it had caliber 1617 movements within it. It was an extra flat pocket watch, which it gained fame for. In 1930, the Zodiac watch company would patent a method of shock proofing that used a z shaped spring clip that fit over the balance. And, in this year, the first of its Swiss automatic watches was launched.

In 1932, Zodiac watches launches another watch, this time its first Swiss analog quartz watch. It would include the famous beta 21 calibre in it. Five years later, a new watch innovation was offered by Zodiac. That was the 10.5 Ligne and 8 day wristwatch movement. The Basel Watch Fair, a very prestigious event that all watch makers took pride in, was the launch place of Zodiac's Astrograhic watch, in 1949. This was a self winding watch that has the ability to reserve gauge measuring hours of power. The Zodiac model was one of two that had the ability to reserve collection like this at that time.

Zodiac Watches

In 1953, the company looked for other ways to develop and follow the trends (if not setting them.) In this year, they launched the Sea Wolf, which was the first diver's watch that offers serious results. It was the first diver's watch to be manufactured for the general population, too. The Super Sea Wolf would be a later edition of this watch and would be able to handle water pressure has at 750 meters.

In the 1960's, the Zodiac watch line added a 24 hour GMT hand to the Sea World watch and it also introduced its newest line of fashionable and functional watches: the aerospace. The Aerospace Jet was introduced in 1962 and was very unique: it had 24 hands that only traversed the dial one time every 24 hours. The company also produced the first Swiss electronic watch called the Dynotron in 1968. In 1970, the first Swiss analog quartz watch would be launched by Zodiac called the Beta 21 Calibre, which would become a famous watch line for years to come.

In the 1970's and 1980's Zodiac watches continued to astound. The company introduced the first LCD watches and obtained the chronometer certificate. Later, in 2004, the vintage inspired watches were re-launched, including the Sea Dragon and V World that were some of the most vintage in style, but they added contemporary touches to them. Today, the Zodiac watch line continues to offer new and interesting innovation with each release of a watch collection.

A Personal Review of Longines Watches

I have long been a fan of Longines watches. Longines are impeccably made and stylish timepieces. Longines watches are affordable Swiss watches for the average consumer, but being affordable doesn't mean you have to forgo quality.

Longines have been making quality watches since 1832. In 1912 Longines made history in the world of sports by introducing the concept of an electric wire, which at the start and finish of a race, activated and stopped a timing mechanism. This innovation in timekeeping by Longines has ensured that Longines have been appointed official timekeepers at many of the world's top sporting events. Longines sports watches reflect this sporting history. But Longines also make many elegant watches for both men and women; I think Longines watches for women are especially beautiful. The current collection of Longines watches reflect this.

Bulova

The DolceVita collection by Longines is simple and elegant in design. The face is rectangular with simple hour markers. The DolceVita dial comes in black, white or pink mother of pearl. The case comes in stainless steel, although you can buy a gold case set with 32 Top Wesselton diamonds (0.32 carat) - this comes with matching gold bracelet. Stainless steel versions can also be bought with inlaid diamonds and come with either stainless steel bracelets or white or black lacquered leather strap. Some versions of the Longines DolceVita can be worn by men, but it is as an elegant ladies watch that the Longines DolceVita truly comes into its own.

A Personal Review of Longines Watches

Longines claim that the Evidenza is invocative of the 1920s. I feel there is some justification in this as the facia of the watch does seem to be old fashioned - but not out-of-date. The tonneau shape of the case goes back to a Longines model dating from 1911; the tonneau shape being an oval with flattened ends. The Longines Evidenza is suitable for both men and women. The casing is stainless steel although there is a ladies gold version set 44, 0.22 carat, diamonds. The Longines Evidenza comes with either a quartz or self-winding movement. My favourite Evidenza is the one that comes in a stainless steel case with dark brown alligator strap, enhanced by 12 blue painted Arabic numerals. This model also features a moon-phase display with a 31-day calendar at 6 o'clock as well as day of the week and month apertures at 12 o'clock - a very nice watch.

The Longines BelleArti is a truly elegant ladies watch. I am fortunate enough to have been able to buy my wife a Longines BelleArti watch for her birthday. The BelleArti range are simple and understated, evoking memories of the Art Deco movement of the 1920s. The dial comes in black, silver or mother-of-pearl. All dials feature 11 Arabic figures, a second subdial at 6 o'clock and "Cathedral" hands. Some models are available with inlaid diamonds - my wife's watch is without. The casing of the Longines BelleArti is rectangular with a sight curvature of the sides, lending the whole watch a very feminie feel.

La Grande Classique de Longines styling calls much upon the earlier design traditions of Longines. The casing is a simple circle and comes in either stainless steel or gold - some models come with inlaid diamonds. As you might expect, for this classical style of watch, the faces come in black, white or mother of pearl. The Logines Grande Classique is definitely for thise of prefer the look of a more traditional watch.

The Longines LungoMare is for those who like a more modern looking watch. There is a ladies verion of this watch. The casing is round and comes only in stainless steel. The LungoMare is also water resitant to 100 meters. I really like the LungoMare. It's pure understated style. It avoids stylistic gimmicks, such as big crowns, over-sized hands and cluttered facia. This watch rivals such makes as Breitling, Tag Heuer and Rolex but priced at a more realistic price for consumers.

Longines also make the the Lingbergh watch. It commemorates the first flight across the Atlantic by Charles Lindbergh. Personally I don't like commemorative watches and I'm not a fan of the design of this watch either.

The Longines Master collection appeals to those who want the most functionality out of their watch. Most watches in this collection come with complications, self-winding mechanical movements beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, with a rated power reserve of 42 hours. Many also come with a chronograph function. I feel the Longines Master collection is for those who want the best from what Longines has to offer.

All longines watches come with sapphire glass and superb movements. And Longines offer a broad range of designs to choose from, unlike other swiss watch makers. I like Longines watches: Longines make owning a quality Swiss affordable for the average consumer.

In the year 1972, the first Pulsar watch was made public by the Hamilton Watch Company. The expertise and novelty, through which it was created, mesmerized some contemporary press reports to shower a huge amount of praise on it. At that time, it was the first of its kind incorporating digital display and electronic quartz. In the midst of a light emitting diode, it got a new space-age look.

Bulova

Pulsar watches were a 'colossal beat' and had a great demand in those times. At the time, when the watch boom lessened a bit, since then, the Pulsar brand had got hold of a vast territory and made its lasting impression worldwide. Subsequent to a string of alterations in brand ownership, Pulsar watches were launched in the U.S. in 1979 by Seiko Corporation of America. By means of latest looks and innovative features, this collection was the first full line series of all-quartz, specially designed for men and women.

History of Pulsar Watches

The move became a huge sensation and brought eminence to the brand. To replicate the accomplishment of the U.S. market, in the 1980s, the Pulsar brand was rolled out in the UK, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Spain and other European markets. This move saw the brand taking sway over worldwide market. The company continued with its expansion strategy so as to gain a wider geographical coverage.

In the mid 1980s, the company added some new range to its existing products and started taking control over the market by bringing in the latest technologies. It enlarged its collection of timepieces and inducted classic sport and dress watches to lure women. Further, in the mid 1990s, it amassed some most extraordinary compilations: Sports, Titanium, Diamond and Pocket. To remain competitive, it added some magnificent features which were unique in nature. The patented integrated circuit technology, which is one of those remarkable features, was handy in providing a quick-start function. The LumiBrite dial, an exciting feature, was capable of shining for a long duration with no push of any special button. From the time of its market entry, it has maintained its cutting edge of approach and expertise. Right throughout in its stupendous journey, the company built nearly each and every Pulsar watch to match the topmost values of quality.

How Feng Shui Predictions Are Made for 2013

Feng Shui annual predictions come from a variety of sources. We can talk in very general terms when it comes to global predictions, or directionology as it relates to the individual house, as well as some observations specific to the person based on their own birth date.

In the Year of the Snake, it's bound to be a good year for some people, but not necessarily those born in the Year of the Snake, such as the years 1953, 1965, 1977, or 1989. For example, we have five different types of Snake people (Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, or Metal Snakes). If it sounds a bit like Chinese Astrology, that is because the two predictive arts work really well with each other. In a general way, we can say that the Year of the Snake may be even more challenging to people born in the Year of the Pig because those two signs are always in opposition to each other.

On a larger scale, we can refer to the Snake and Pig directions as being more vulnerable to accidents or mishaps in the Snake Year. When referring to any kind of map, these directions are relative to the center point, so of course there will be overlapping influences. The Snake direction is S/SE and the Pig direction is N/NW. If you did not know before, now you know that the zodiac signs relate to both time and direction!

How Feng Shui Predictions Are Made for 2013

If you were trying to locate these directions in relation to the country you live in or the state you live in, these directions would be relative to the geometric center of the country or state.

These predictions can be taken down to an individual city or in the common domain of a Feng Shui practitioner, your very house or business.

While Chinese Astrology imparts a 12 year repeating cycle inside a grander 60 year cycle, in Feng Shui we have a 9 year repeating cycle as well as 20 Year Eras. So for instance, the same annual energy which will come to your bedroom in 2013 is the same energy that resided there in 2004. If your bedroom is in the southeast, then 2013 may be more romantic encounters. The annual Five Yellow Star is residing in the center (not technically a direction) and this has many Chinese metaphysicians concerned because the 5 Yellow Star is associated with disasters and pain in the current times we live in. To have that kind of energy in the center of every structure or in the center core of every city or country, it can suggest a tendency of more upheaval, arguments, strife or accidents. And since we live in Period 8 (from 2004 until 2024), this combination of "earth" energies can also suggest a higher incidence of earthquakes or other natural phenomenon related to the earth which could include drought or landslides or anything extreme related to the earth.

The 5 Yellow Star is related to set-backs or delays and yet we can't honestly say that everyone on the planet will be harnessed to this kind of energy with no escape. This is where the individual destiny and the individual house come into play. For example, one person may live in a house where the annual 2 star of sickness and health may be at their front door in 2013 (Southwest) and their prospects for the year may not be as good as someone whose front door welcomes the annual 8 wealth star (Northeast) in 2013. In Xuan Kong Fei Xing (Flying Star School) the age of the house may still determine more of what the occupant's experiences will be than the annual cycles. But annual cycles will act as a trigger for more dormant energies. As a theoretical example, the direction of south will be associated with a greater potential for a fire accident in 2013 and if that annual force joins an area of a floor plan already vulnerable to a fire, then the annual cycle may just be the last straw. In contrast, the annual 9 fire star could join positive energy and actually bring great fortune to someone. This is why a competent and comprehensive evaluation has to be performed, discovering the uniqueness of each property.

One aspect of uniqueness to 2013 will be that the annual "star" in each direction will match the inherent element for each of the eight basic directions. For example, the annual 1 star will be in the North in 2013. Both the 1 star and the North resonate with the water element. The annual 7 metal start will be in the west and west is inherently a "metal" type direction. What this is going to do is intensify both positive and negative influences of each direction.

Historically, these passages of time were taken so seriously that the Chinese emperors would wear robes in the color associated with the season or grander cycles of the time. My best advice for anyone really interested in their potential for the year, is to enlist the services of a highly trained astrologer, Feng Shui master or Nine Star Ki diviner to look deeper into the stars and what they have to say for you personally, transcending the superficial. Otherwise, the general predictions are just that, general.

Should I Paint My Front Door Red? The Number One Feng Shui Question

Many people ask us this very question. I am sure you have all met someone that has told you after they painted their door red their life changed!

Painting you front door will actually bring new energy into your home! But Red is not your only option and in some cases not even your best options. Red in Feng Shui is very powerful and brings with it prosperity, abundance and success but it may not be the right choice for you.

With the Flying Star method of Feng Shui - we can determine if you home has any "star combinations" that are unfavourable. If so then painting your door red might actually make them worse! As well there are certain directions each calendar year that are not good to place any red in so you should be extras cautious with these directions.

Should I Paint My Front Door Red? The Number One Feng Shui Question

With Traditional compass directions, colour is associated with each specific direction or aspiration within the Bagua Chart. As well different element strength can determine whether its best to have a wood or metal door. Your choice of colour has a great deal to do with what you are looking to accomplish in your life. Your goals help to determine which direction to take with choice of colours. Your colour choice should also fit within the colour scheme of the rest of the exterior of your home for Feng Shui is about creating balance and living in harmony with your surroundings. Some of the most popular colour choices include:

Black & Dark Blue

Generally associated with North facing doors, black and blue are very good colours for those of use who are seeking new career success, direction or opportunity.

White, Silver, Copper or Gold

Generally associated with the West. & Northwest, White doors are metal energy and great for creative pursuits Green & Blue Generally associated with East and South East facing door, these colours are associate with new growth, new beginnings, and strong vitality and health. The energy here is wood.

Brown & Yellow

Generally associated with the North East or the South West - this earth energy is grounding and quiet, so not the best choice for an active front door, unless the stars look favourably upon instilling additional earth energy here.

Red, Pink & Purple

Generally associated with the South , this fire energy is associated with fame, reputation and prosperity.

If you don't like your current front door colour it is probably because it is not suited to what you are looking to achieve. Without doing a full consultation, the next best thing is to try the colour you gravitate towards based on what you are trying to achieve and then see what happens! If things begin to change for the better than you chose well! If not, then just change it again to another colour!

Butterfly Symbol Meaning in Feng Shui and Chinese Culture

In China, butterfly has been a popular symbol for centuries. The butterfly is called 'hu tieh' in Mandarin language. The word 'tieh' translates as seventy years, and because of this the animals are taken as a symbol of long life. Butterfly to the Chinese also represents love, specifically young love. It symbolizes an undying bond between lovers.

In feng shui applications, the use of butterflies is considered the same as the use of the birds symbol. Both butterflies and birds are flying free, and this speaks to the deep human longing for a free and joyful life close to sky/heaven. Since love is the most transformative feeling that makes people feel like flying, the butterfly is the most common symbol used as a feng shui cure for love and romance. Another excellent use of this symbol in feng shui is in the Creativity and Children area of the Bagua as this will energize the free flow of your life's creative energy.

The image of butterflies can also be used as a temporary cure for any area of your life that needs transformation. When you are experiencing difficulties in specific areas of your life, try to bring the energy of these butterflies into the corresponding Bagua areas of your bedroom or home. Butterfly knows how to gracefully go through stages of transformation in order to become the beauty they are, and you will be guided to do the same with grace and ease in your life.

Butterfly Symbol Meaning in Feng Shui and Chinese Culture

The butterfly design embroidered on towels is a perfect gift for a new couple. Although butterflies have been depicted through various mediums of art but there is nothing more popular than Chinese kites that feature these insects. The butterfly kite is one of the most popular kites on earth. In ancient times, the kites were actually used as wall hangings in homes. This was due to the meaning of the symbol that butterfly had for the Chinese. With the butterfly, they sought to ensure a healthy and long life by making use of the art works to decorate their homes.

Other butterfly art is manifested in the body art of tattooing. This butterfly symbol is a hot favorite especially amongst the ladies. These butterflies have also been represented through the unique, beautiful art form of scroll painting. Images of butterfly were painted upon silk screens in different colors and sometimes accompanied with some Chinese calligraphic text stating some inspirational words.

Five Steps Of Learning And Retention - How To More Effectively Grow Your Business With New Ideas

Learning - the acquisition of new information or knowledge, and Retention - the ability to capture that information and recall it when wanted or needed, is actually a process that involves five steps:

First, is Impact. That is, actually receiving the idea in your mind. Impact can be in the form of a word, a visual observation or a concept. It makes no difference. Your mind isn't capable of making a distinction between a visual or an actual experience. Nor is it capable of determining the difference between a conscious or an unconscious impact an idea may have on you. As far as your mind is concerned, those experiences are all the same and your mind will accept them, regardless.

If information or an experience appears real to your mind, your emotions and nervous system will react as though it were actually real. To illustrate this point, try this simple experiment:

Five Steps Of Learning And Retention - How To More Effectively Grow Your Business With New Ideas

Seat yourself in a comfortable chair, feet flat on the floor and your hands resting comfortably in your lap. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, let it out slowly and relax. Take another one. Let it out slowly. Relax even more. Picture in your mind, a lemon resting on a table in front of you. Visualize it. See it clearly. Look at it's shape - it's color - it's texture. Now, mentally reach out with your hand and pick up the lemon. Bring it up to your face. Look at it closely. Squeeze it. Do you notice how firm it feels? Feel the texture of the lemon's dimply and waxy skin. Notice the lemon's yellow color and round shape, with its pointy ends. Now, hold it up to your nose. Smell it. Do you notice the lemon's citrusy smell? Place the lemon on the table and mentally pick up a knife that's laying nearby. Cut the lemon in two. Pick up one half of the lemon and see the juice dripping from it. Bring the lemon up to your nose. Smell it again. Now bite into the lemon.

What's happening to you right now? Is saliva flooding your mouth, both in your mind, as well as physically?

Consider what just happened. In actuality, there was no lemon. You just pictured one in your mind. While this was just a mental exercise, and the lemon was just imagined, chances are, if you are like most people the mental image you were playing on the screen of your mind triggered certain responses which manifested themselves physically. This simple demonstration demonstrates that Impact is a critical step involved in the process of learning and retention.

The second step is Repetition. One university study revealed that an idea that was read or heard only one time was 66% forgotten within 24 hours. But if that same idea was read or heard repeatedly for 8 days, up to 90% of it could be retained at the end of the eight days.

One of the most effective ways to learn from a book or an article, is to read through it, and then go back and read it again. But the second time you read it, be sure you have a highlighter, a pen and notepad handy. Mark up the book or the article. Write down the ideas that you feel fit your personal business situation. This repetition will help you retain more of the information than if you had read it only once.

The third step in the learning and retention process is Utilization. This is the "doing" step. It is here that neuromuscular pathways are actually developed, creating a "mind muscle memory." And according to the study quoted earlier, once you physically experience an action, it becomes twice as easy to recall as if you had heard it only.

Fourth, is Internalization... actually making the idea an integral part of you. That may involve some customizing or tailoring of the idea to fit your situation or style, but it is vitally important for you to personalize the idea and make it "yours."

The fifth step is Reinforcement. In order to maximize the effectiveness of an idea you should continually be looking for ways to support and strengthen it. The more you can support the idea, the more you will believe it, the longer you will retain it, and the more effective it will become in helping you serve your customers' needs.

Now, what does all this have to do with your business? Simply this. In your daily business and personal activities, as well as throughout your experience with the information you come across, that you hear, see or read, you are going to be exposed to a great number of ideas. Some will be brand new... that is, you've never heard them before. Some will be ideas you have heard in the past, but have forgotten. And others will be ideas you come up with on your own as a result of something that was triggered in your mind as you read. Understanding and applying these five steps in the learning and retention process can help you retain more of what you read and experience.
